When to see an emergency dentist

Call us right away if you're dealing with any of the following — waiting usually makes dental problems worse and more expensive to fix:

  • Severe or throbbing toothache that won't ease with over-the-counter pain relievers
  • A knocked-out, loose, or pushed-out tooth
  • A cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
  • Swelling of the face, gums, or jaw, which can signal an infection or abscess
  • A lost filling, crown, or dental bridge
  • Bleeding or injury to the lips, gums, or tongue after an accident

If you have facial swelling that affects your breathing or swallowing, a high fever, or trauma from a serious accident, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room first.

What to do before you get here

A few simple steps can protect the tooth and ease pain while you're on your way in:

  • Knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown (not the root), gently rinse it, and if you can, place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in a cup of milk. Getting to us within an hour gives the best chance of saving it.
  • Broken or chipped tooth: rinse with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
  • Toothache: rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove anything trapped between teeth. Don't place aspirin directly on the gum.
  • Lost filling or crown: keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side until we see you.

Same-day and weekend relief

We hold time in the daily schedule for emergencies and see urgent patients on Saturdays, when many Edison-area offices are closed. Call (732) 985-1120 and tell our team what's going on — we'll get you in as quickly as we can and, if needed, start with treatment to relieve pain the same visit.

Cost and insurance

Most dental emergencies start with an emergency exam and X-ray so we can see exactly what's wrong before recommending treatment. We accept major PPO dental insurance and will verify your specific benefits before your visit so there are no surprises. Paying out of pocket? We'll walk you through the cost up front.
